Benidorm is to reuse 2.5 millon litres of water from local swimming pools to wash the streets. So far this year as many as 12 pools from buildings and hotels have been emptied as part of the scheme which was first launched by the City Hall in 2003.
Environment councillor, Francisco Saval, said that the plan meant that ‘every last drop’ of water could be reused for hosing down streets or watering gardens. He called on individuals, communities and hoteliers who are planning to empty their polls to get in touch with the council so that one of their tankers could go and pump out their water.
The measure is however criticised by the Socialist opposition in the City Hall who say it is just propaganda from the governing team. Socialist councillor, Mariola Fluvià, added ‘Don’t forget that these swimming pools are all filled again later’.
