In a move it insists is deadly serious, Benidorm has applied for Unesco World Heritage Site status. If successful, this would place the Costa Blanca resort on a list of cultural icons that includes the Acropolis, Machu Picchu and the Great Wall of China.
Admitting that Benidorm didn’t immediately spring to mind as an icon of cultural significance, Maria Jose Montiel Vaquer, director of the Benidorm tourist board, argued that the town had “a special place in architectural history as the first high-rise resort in Europe”.
